Starting Colts A Western Horseman Book Anyone who reads this book and Teams to utilize the material will benefit tremendously. Mike Kevil is one of the few horsemen who can get the job done on horseback and relate to people in understandable terms. Mike Kevil is one of the best young horsemen that I have ever known. He is equally as good with people as he is with horses. The communication between himself and people, and between himself and horses, is a very rare talent. I've been breaking, training, and showing horses for almost more years than I care to remember. Throughout my career, I've met many horsemen, but very few of them have had the skill that Mike Kevil does for starting young horses properly. In my opinion, he is one of the very best. No matter what a colt will eventually be used for-pleasure, reining, cutting, roping, ranch work, whatever-he's got to have a good foundation. Mike's terrific at doing this. He has broke a number of cutting horse prospects for me, and when he turned them |

UNDERSTANDING Older horses are like part of the family. Many owners still take care of the horses and ponies they had when they were younger. And these horses don't ask for much - just a place to live, food to eat, and a little love and attention. But owners can do more for their older equine friends. The aging process in horses, like in humans, affects all of the body's tissues, organs, and systems. But when kept in good health, many older horses are sound enough to be ridden well into their 20s, and for some, even into their 30s. Until now, practical information to help in caring for older horses has been difficult to find. Understanding the Older Horse provides owners with the guidelines necessary to give their equine senior citizens the best care possible. Written by Dr. Robert E. Holland, who drew upon his veterinary work as well as his childhood experiences caring for an older |

UNDERSTANDING "Breeding some mares sometimes can feel like trying to pound the proverbial square peg into a round hole. When something seems harder than it should be, there is usually a reason. This is an obvious red flag that a closer look at the mare's reproductive tract, the stallion, and/or the management is probably in order." So writes Christine M. Schweizer, DVM, in her new book, Understanding Breeding Management. This authoritative yet straightforward guide discusses the preparations required - and the challenges - of getting mares pregnant. Schweizer covers such topics as the mare's anatomy, the reproductive system, and the importance of teasing and veterinary monitoring. The Cornell University instructor also examines the different breeding methods, including artificial insemination. Schweizer discusses ways to optimize the chances of conception through various management techniques and how to deal with infertility. Anyone who owns a mare will benefit from this important book, a companion to Schweizer's earlier work, Understanding the Broodmare. |

UNDERSTANDING The economic health of many farms is directly related to the heath and well-being of their stallions. Keeping a stallion in good condition both during and offer the breeding season should be a priority. But while many volumes of information exist on broodmare management, knowledge of stallion management lags behind. With Understanding the Stallion, the horse owner is provided with a complete overview of reproduction in the stallion. This book examines the stallion's anatomy and physiology in detail as well as training the stallion to breed and proper management. Understanding the Stallion also addresses factors that could affect a stallion's reproductive performance and answers some commonly asked questions about stallion management. Written by leading stallion authority E. L. Squires, Ph.D., supervisor of the Equine Reproductive Laboratory at Colorado State University, Understanding the Stallion is an invaluable and practical guide for both stallion owners and managers and persons considering purchasing their first stallion. |
